About Countdown


A subsidiary of Woolworths, Countdown Supermarkets span across various retail locations in New Zealand. All stores are a distinct colouring of black and green, with the recent logo similar to that of the Australia equivalent “Woolies”. Countdown offers a wide range of products including dairy, meat, deli foods, seafood, bakey, fresh vegetables, alcohol, pet food, baby products, cosmetics, drinks and general groceries.The main club scheme for Countdown is the “one card” which provides in store discounts and points towards fuel discounts. Countdown provides both an in store shopping experience as well as an online shopping option. The online shopping includes both ‘click and collect’ and a delivery service. Some Countdown supermarkets in the larger city locations also include a Countdown pharmacywhich provides prescriptions at a discounted rate.

In 2019 Countdown introduced a “quiet hour”, this initiative was targeted at families that had children with sensory sensitivities such as autism. The campaign was successful and Countdown now has a quiet hour for people and families with eye or ear sensitivities. As a supermarket it not only promotes inclusion of disabilities but is also rainbow tick certified catering to the LGBTQ+ community.

History


The first Countdown supermarket opened in 1981 and it has now grown to 184 stores across both islands. The first Countdown was opened in Papanui, Christchurch and was originally called Rattrays Wholesale. In 2002 Countdown supermarkets was purchased by Progressive enterprises which then rebranded to Woolworths. It is part of one of the two supermarket chains in New Zealand, the competitor being Foodstuffs. 

Countdown’s free fruit initiative allows children to have a free piece of fruit provided at the start of the family shop, in order to promote healthy eating and provide a distraction for young shoppers.
