Four Square is known for the ‘Four Square man’ which is the picture that is used in advertising and on the side of most Four Squares. The Four Square man initially only appeared on advertising and pamphlets but it became such a reputable logo that people associated with the brand, that it was transitioned in the main advertising of Four Square. This is a picture of a man with an apron on, doing the thumbs up. And although he hasn’t always done the thumbs up, the picture of the cartoon man is well known and identifiable to most kiwis.
Focusing on being a ‘provincial’ grocery store that brand partakes in many community events across the country. History
Four Square is a chain of supermarkets that were founded by John Heaton Barker in 1920. Barker was also founder of the foodstuffs brand, and found that the large supermarkets were taking precedence over the smaller locally owned and operated grocers. Four Square was designed as a co-operative with these independent grocers, where a larger business could help to build one common branding across the independent stores.
In the 1950’s the Four Square man was incorporated in the brand, through firstly advertising and then part of the stores branding. As a novelty Four Square also ‘welcomes babies’ on July 4th to celebrate the birth of their brand. Many children around New Zealand have received congratulatory gifts from this Four Square initiative.
