History

Glengarry is a wine and alcohol store that has been running since 1945. The Glengarry winery was founded by Josef Jakicevich who came to New Zealand from Croatia. This was a small family business that became a thriving vineyard in the North Island. In 1945 Josef was granted a wine resellers licence which meant he was able to sell other wines (from a variety of vineyards) to the local community, as he was only one of two businesses granted this licence he opened a store in auckland. At the time the licence only allowed his business to sell New Zealand wines, and set selected varieties of wines. In the 1950’s the legistraition changed meaning restaurants and other businesses were permitted to sell alcohol, this gave a lot more freedom to the business to sell a wider variety of wines and other alcohol. Between 1980s-2000 Josef’s grandsons became more involved in the business and it expanded locations, growing quickly. They are now the largest independent family owned wine retailer in New Zealand and provide their services at their stores as well as online.
